LEARN HOW TO LUBRICATE YOUR SHREDDER THE BEST

Does your paper shredder make a strange noise? Does it takes much longer to shred your documents than usual? Then chances are that you have to provide your shredder with oil. Even the best paper shredders have that problem because during the shredding of paper, there is a lot of dust. And this dust accumulates between the blades.

By providing your shredder regularly with oil, the life and performance of the shredder is improved. But how often and when to oil your shredder?

How often and when a shredder needs to be lubricated?

As a rule of thumb, remember that you need to oil the shredder when the tray is empty. But if you make heavy use of your shredder, it is also advisable to lubricate the blades directly. Most users will lubricate a shredder average once a week. It is also good to know that a “micro cut shredder” needs much more regular lubrication than a simple “cross cut shredder.” GREASE THE BLADE WHEN THE TRAY IS EMPTY OR AFTER INTENSIVE USE.

Three methods to oil your shredder

In the manual of your shredder, it describes how to oil your machine. There are generally three ways how to put oil for the blades:

  • Direct method
  • Indirect method
  • Oil Sheets

1) Direct method

This method takes you directly to oil in the entry throat. Use a container with a small official shredder oil pouring opening. And then follow these steps:

  • Keep your shredder oil on hand.
  • Turn on the retraction function or reverse mode and wait 10 seconds.
  • Turn off the shredder completely.
  • Then pour the oil in a movement from left to right directly in the entry throat.
  • Then let the shredder rotate in half a minute so that the blades are well lubricated.

You have now successfully oiled your paper shredder.

2) Indirect method: Paper sandwich method

This method is to put the oil on a standard sheet of A4 paper. Then you destroy the paper in your shredder. Proceed as follows:

  • Grab a standard sheet of A4 paper.
  • Apply a thin line of oil to the skin from top left to bottom right. And from the top right to bottom left. Make sure you are not completely soaked the paper with oil.
  • Let the oil soak a few seconds.
  • Pick up a standard A4 sheet of paper and place it on the oiled side of the other sheet of A4 paper. You have now created a “paper sandwich”.
  • Turn on the retraction function or reverse mode and wait 10 seconds.
  • Put your shredder in the normal position.
  • Then destroy the two sheets of paper, or “paper sandwich” in the feed opening of the shredder. Make sure the oil does not drip next to or on the machine.
  • Turn off the retraction function and reverse function in the shredder and let it run half a minute so that the blades are well lubricated.

You have now successfully oiled your paper shredder.

3) Using oil sheets

Besides bottles of shredder oil, you can also purchase oil sheets. These sheets are fully prepared and ready to destroy. How to proceed:

  • Grab an oil sheet.
  • Turn on the retraction function or reverse mode and wait 10 seconds.
  • Put your shredder in the normal position.
  • Destroy the oil sheets.
  • Turn off the retraction function or reverse function and let the shredder to run for half a minute so that the blades are well lubricated

You have now successfully oiled your paper shredder.

Use official lubricating oil for paper shredder

Always lubricate your shredder with lubricating oil from the manufacturer. So do not use other kind of oil which may damage your shredder.

Whatever method we recommend to use?

Consult your manual for advice from the manufacturer. There is no clear method indicated? Our advice is to use the indirect method. This prevents spilling oil on your machine or apply too much oil.
Always use official shredder oil

It is important that you always use the official shredder oil to lubricate your shredder. When using other types of oil, you risk burning your shredder on fire.
